Eccleshall Power Plant

Eccleshall Biomass is one of the first dedicated bio-energy power plants in the UK.

Owned by Eccleshall Biomass, and developed in partnership with Raleigh Hall Properties and Talbott’s Heating, the project received one of five UK grants from the DTI Bioenergy Capital Grants Scheme, to establish power generation plants fuelled by energy crops, along with grant funding from Advantage West Midlands.

·         2 megawatt generator

·         Fuel: The energy crop Miscanthus is the main fuel and will be grown locally offering diversification opportunities and long term fuel supply contracts for up to 60 farms. BiEcc Ltd has been established by local farmers to co-ordinate fuel supply. Other energy crops and clean wood chip can also be used as a fuel.

·         52 tonnes a day of fuel or 22,000 tonnes/year

·         Plant will operate for 8,000 hours per year

·         16,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy direct to the network

·         Carbon Savings: 1 tonne per hour of CO2 that would have been emitted by generating electricity from fossil fuel.

The plant generates enough electricity to run 2,600 homes equivalent to the local town of Eccleshall making it one of the first carbon neutral towns in the country. It is also supporting the rural economy by creating local jobs and providing the opportunity for farms to diversify into energy crops.
