Herefordshire Case Studies
Garnons Estate
- A 120kW VETO wood chip boiler is installed to heat the main house and swimming pool.
- The system produces hot water, and is connected to the central heating.
- This system largely replaces two oil-filled boilers.
- The boiler uses around 80 tonnes of seasoned wood fuel each year and generates 200,000 kWh of renewable energy every year.
- The hopper is loaded once a week, with the wood chips coming from the sustainably managed woodland area on the estate.
- The boiler was supplied and installed by Ecoenergy, with the whole system costing just under £18,000, including the new boiler house and its foundation.
Weobley School
- A wood fuel heating system was installed at Woebley School in 1997
- Incorporates a 350kW wood combustion boiler to meet the base load heating requirements or both the primary school and adjacent secondary school.
- The system uses between 150 and 300 tonnes of dry chips per year, which is supplied from local wood thinnings and from willow and poplar short rotation forestry.
- Exhaust gases are cleaned before being released to atmosphere, and the ash is used as fertiliser on the school garden.
